Kilwa Ruins: You can see the Great Mosque, the mosque is considered to be the largest in the East African coast. You can also see, it has domed chambers, monolithic pillars, water tanks, and slabs for prayers. You also see the Great House; the remains of a residential complex. This group of 3 inter-connected dwellings, with sunken courtyards and numerous rooms. It gives an insight into the lives of Kilwa’s wealthy inhabitant during the 14th to 16th centuries, for you to see.
Small domed Mosque: you can see a small mosque with a domed and vaulted roof. It is originally decorated with glazed Islamic bowls set in the plaster-work Makutani Palace. Makutani is a large enclosure surrounded by a defensive wall as you can see. A fortified palace dominates the area. It was built to protect the Sultan and his family from Omani aggression during the 18th Century. Makutani means where the big walls are. Gereza (Kilwa ‘s fort) which was built by Portuguese and later re-built by the Omani Settlers from Zanzibar in the early 19th Century. It is dominating the view of the island from far Husuni Kubwa: these extensive ruins are probably the remains of a grand palace and trading complex built by the Sultan Al-Hassan bin Sulaiman, Kilwa’s greatest builder in the early 14th Century.
