Details of Aberdares National Park

Aberdares National Park is located in Central Kenya about 160 km from Nairobi and it is the third highest mountain range in Kenya. The Aberdares National Park is covering the higher areas of the Aberdares Mountain Ranges which are isolated volcanic range that formed on the Eastern wall of the Rift Valley. It runs 100 Kms north to South and is the third highest mountain range in Kenya.

Elephants roam through the thick dense forest

There are the moorlands full of mist and here elephants roam through the thick dense forest and sights of spectacular waterfalls plunging down into pools and streams filled with trout.

Mixed forest vegetation creates a bizarre topography

There are 2 peaks on the Aberdares and the mixed forest vegetation creates a bizarre topography. The Black Rhino, leopard, baboon, black and white Colobus monkey and Skyes monkey live in these mountains. There are rare sightings of the lion, the golden cat and the bongo an elusive forest antelope that lives in the mountain.

A great perspective view of the ice peaks of Mount Kenya

The park too hosts some of Kenya’s most famous lodges where you have a great perspective view of the ice peaks of Mt Kenya. Providing water to the Tana and Athi rivers. The Aberdares are an important water catchments area providing water to the Tana and Athi rivers one of the largest rivers in Kenya. It is also supplies water to part of Central Rift and Northern drainage basins.

Major attractions

• The Tree tops Lodge in the park is where Queen Elizabeth II learnt of her accession to the British throne.
• The Kimathi/ MauMau hideout caves (for the freedom fights) can be seen.
• Seeing the Water falls such as Karura, Lesatima and Kinangop Peaks, Twin Hills, Elephant Hills.
• The park has second largest population of black rhinos, endangered rare bongo and the giant forest hog including the leopard, some bird species insects and reptiles.
